It was almost quitting time when Brock and I were able to make our way to the cafeteria. After a few questions as to who Lisa and Roberta were, we were directed to the staff lounge. When asked if we could ask some questions, Lisa frowned, “I don’t like to stay late.”

“I’ll pay you each fifty dollars to stay,” Brock said, motioning to a round table with four chairs. “Just for a few minutes, please.”

They both took a seat. Brock and I sat across from them.

I went through my spiel about writing an article in regard to Lauren’s murder. “I was told you both worked that night.”

“Horrible thing,” Roberta said. “Yes, we were there. I carried a tray with flutes of champagne. Lisa carried wine. Miss Mayfield had a lot of wine.”

“Did either of you see who came and went from her dressing room?”

“I did,” Lisa said. “I brought the wine straight to her. Her makeup artist was in and out all night. Mr. Hanson was, too. Her manager, that actor, Gary Porter, a janitor—”

“Janitor?” I glanced at Brock. “Why would a janitor be there during the festivities?”

“I didn’t see his face,” Lisa continued, “but he wore navy coveralls and a baseball cap. He was fat and short.”

Finally, we were getting somewhere. Ben Jones was on the short and hefty scale. He’d also admitted to being there. He could have arrived earlier than we thought. “Anything else?”

She shrugged. “I’m sure there were others. I didn’t camp outside her room, and there was a lot of people there that night.”

“I understand.” I handed them both a business card. “Please call me if you think of anything at all.”

Roberta stared at the card for a minute. “I didn’t see the janitor, but I did smell a perfume that didn’t belong to Miss Mayfield.”

“How do you know that?” Brock’s eyes narrowed.

“Because I like what she wore and tried to buy some. Way out of my price range. What I smelled when I looked into the room during all the commotion was a lot sweeter. Almost sicky sweet. Something I’ve smelled at the drugstore.”

Amber wore a sweet cologne, but she had a reason to be there. Now, not only would I be looking at everyone’s shoes, I’d be sniffing them. I stood and waited while Brock handed each of the women a fifty-dollar bill.

Outside, I said, “We need to talk to Ben Jones. He fits the description of the person Lisa saw going into Lauren’s room.”

“I agree.” We returned to the maintenance shed to find out Rod and Ben had left for the day.

“What kind of perfume did Lauren wear?” I asked.

“Gypsy something. It’s not that expensive. Around fifty dollars.”

I rolled my eyes. “That’s a lot of money for someone who makes minimum wage, Brock. Stop being a snob.”

“I’m not a snob.” He frowned. “Am I?”

“You tend to be.” By now we had reached my car and I slid into the driver’s seat.

Brock got in the other side. “I never would have thought of myself that way.
